What do folk stories tell us about courtship?

  • The young people involved share the same goal: to find a marriage partner.
  • They have similar feelings: great attraction for each other.
  • They face similar problems: to overcome obstacles placed in their way.
  • They have similar "enemies": family and/or the community preventing their reaching their goal.
  • They may need special assistance in overcoming obstacles.
  • They finally succeed and are united in marriage.
