What do folk stories tell us about courtship?
- The young people involved share the same goal: to find a marriage partner.
- They have similar feelings: great attraction for each other.
- They face similar problems: to overcome obstacles placed in their way.
- They have similar "enemies": family and/or the community preventing their reaching their goal.
- They may need special assistance in overcoming obstacles.
- They finally succeed and are united in marriage.
There are a great many courtship stories that present the elements
listed above. One sample story is Rapunzel.
