Stories Work to Empower Abused Women
|
Durham, NC -
A StoriesWork event spotlights the role of the humanities in prevention and healing.
StoriesWork, the Durham-based non-profit organization dedicated to empowering abused women through therapeutic storytelling, is hosting an evening of art, poetry and storytelling at the Southwest Branch, Durham Public Library. Designed to raise awareness about domestic violence during Domestic Violence Month, the October 23 event demonstrates how the humanities can be invaluable in expressing the pain and guiding women in the first critical steps toward healing.
The celebration of the humanities in education and empowerment features posters, poetry and folk stories along with a discussion on how the arts can help. An exhibition of posters from around the world, provided by the United Nations, demonstrates culturally unique communications delivering the message that abuse is never OK, and that it is up to the entire community to stop the violence and stop the silence. Readings by North Carolina poets Carol Lautier and Sheridan Bushnell give personal power to expressions of how violence against women and children damage us all. A discussion led by Sally Peterson, University of North Carolina instructor and folklorist, emphasizes the role of folklore in revealing the true nature of gender relations and setting the stage for breaking destructive patterns. An open question-answer session will be moderated by StoriesWork founder and director
Lenora Ucko.
Open to the public, the free event is sponsored in part by the North Carolina Humanities Council.
